2007 Alumni Honour Award

Achievements:

Gwen Dubois-Wing graduated from Lakehead University in 1982 with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing, winning a Dean Braun’s Medal for highest overall standing in Nursing. Over the years, she has continued her education with a Master’s of Arts in Nursing from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1991 and a Master’s in Healthcare Administration from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in 1998.

Gwen began her nursing career at McKellar General Hospital, rising to the position of Director of Patient Services. From 1996 to 1998, she worked at the Thunder Bay and District Branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses as Nurse Manager and Nursing Supervisor.

In 1998 Gwen was appointed Executive Director of the Northwestern Ontario District Health Council, where she was responsible for overseeing major initiatives and planning projects for the health system in Northwestern Ontario.

In 2005 the District Health Councils were dismantled and replaced by 14 Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) across the province. Gwen was appointed the first Chief Executive Officer of the North West LHIN, which is responsible for planning, integrating, and funding health care services at the local level, including hospitals, community support services agencies, community health centres, mental health and addiction services, and long-term care homes.

Since 2003 Gwen has been a Professional Associate in the Master of Public Health program at Lakehead University. She has also been a lecturer in the Lakehead University School of Nursing and the Office of Continuing Education and Distributed Learning.

Gwen serves on numerous boards and committees for local, provincial, and national organizations, including the Board of Governors at the Michener Institute, the Board of Directors of the Ontario Telemedicine Network, the Provincial Wait Time Advisory Committee, and the Board of Governors of Confederation College.

The Alumni Honour Award is presented to Gwen Dubois-Wing in recognition of her outstanding achievements as a senior health care manager. Her reputation and accomplishments have brought honour and prestige to Lakehead University and the Alumni Association of Lakehead University.

 

James Dennison

2007 Young Alumni Award

Assistant Vice-President, Risk Management and Portfolio Analysis CIBC Mellon

Achievements:

Like many students, James Dennison took advantage of more than one program at Lakehead University. He graduated with a Civil Engineering Technology Diploma in 1993, but later returned to study commerce. In 1999 he was one of the first students to receive an Honours Bachelor of Commerce with a major in finance. Since then he has continued his education, completing an MBA at the Schulich School of Business at York University and earning the professional designations CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), FRM (Financial Risk Manager), and PRM (Professional Risk Manager).

After graduating from Lakehead University in 1999, James went to work for the federal Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) in Toronto. He served as Manager and Senior Supervisor of the Life Conglomerate Group, which regulates and supervises Canada’s largest life insurance companies, and later as a Director and Design Authority.

In 2005 he joined CIBC Mellon, a joint venture that operates CIBC Mellon Global Securities Services Company (a leading provider of custody services) and CIBC Mellon Trust Company (a leading provider of trust services). As Assistant Vice-President, Risk Management and Portfolio Analysis, James is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining CIBC Mellon’s risk management program and framework, thus ensuring that business risks are measured and managed appropriately.

He has been active with the United Way, working on the OSFI (Toronto) United Way Campaign as Treasurer and Campaign Chair. He is currently Campaign Co-Chair of the CIBC Mellon United Way Campaign.

James was appointed to the Lakehead University Board of Governors in 2006 and serves on the Finance and Investment Committee as well as the University Advancement Committee. He also represents the Board of Governors on the Lakehead University Professional Plan Pension Board.

The Lakehead University Young Alumni Award is presented to James Dennison in recognition of his significant accomplishments in his profession and his service to Lakehead University. His reputation and accomplishments have brought honour and prestige to Lakehead University and the Alumni Association of Lakehead University.
