The Alumni Association of Lakehead University and Lakehead University Athletics are pleased to announce that this year’s Annual Alumni Scholarship Classic exceeded expectations, and raised the most funds ever recorded in the 26 year history of this major fundraising event.
Thanks to the tremendous sponsor support that was received from the Thunder Bay Business Community, this year’s tournament raised over $32,000 in support of the United Way as well as Lakehead University student scholarships. Since the inception of this tournament, over $155,000 has been raised in support of student scholarships.
Jeff Halvorsen, tournament coordinator, commented on this year’s stunning success. “From a fundraising point of view, we raised our bottom line by 100% over last year. It just goes to show what a big heart our community really has.”
This year’s tournament was presented by RBC Royal Bank and was held at prestigious Whitewater Golf Club. The event sold out three weeks in advance and featured 148 golfers. The golfers enjoyed a wonderful patio lunch and 18 holes of golf followed by a scrumptious dinner in the Whitewater Clubhouse.
As well, many par-took in the RBC putting contest. The weather turned out to be beautiful and the golf course was in pristine condition.
This year’s sponsorship support came from over 100 different sources as the Thunder Bay Business Community rallied around this important cause, despite tough economic conditions.
10% of this year’s funds went to support the many important causes of the United Way, while the majority of the funds will be invested directly towards scholarships for post-secondary students in financial need. Next year’s tournament planning is already underway. With a solid base of amazing sponsors, and the tremendous support of the many volunteers and golfers that come out every year, all signs point to more success in 2010! Thank you Thunder Bay!
