On the evening of May 25th, five outstanding alumni were honoured at the annual Lakehead University Alumni Awards Dinner.

The recipients of The Young Alumni Awards were: Michael Power, Vice President, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, and Shy-Anne Hovorka, singer, songwriter, and musician. The Alumni Honour Award was established in 1988 and recognizes alumni “who have demonstrated distinction or outstanding achievement in areas including public service, business, humanities, research, science and technology, and the arts.”

Steven Ashton, Manitoba Provincial Cabinet Minister, and David Shannon, human rights activist and lawyer, were the recipients of the Alumni Honour Award. This Award was established in
2004 and is presented “in recognition of a graduate from the last 10 years who has achieved significant accomplishments since graduation, either in his/her profession, sport, or community service”. It was a wonderful evening and we again send our congratulations to all the honorees.

The Alumni Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Vonnie Cheng, Investment Advisor at Sunlife Financial. She has been a dedicated board member and volunteer, always keen about engaging with her alma mater and making new connections.

The lively evening was marked with inspiring speeches, live music, delectable food, and cash bar. Past yearbooks, department materials, and other memorabilia supported the completed photo archive project on display. The display boards showcased carefully selected photographs from each decade to highlight Lakehead University’s vibrant history, development, and people. This year’s Alumni Awards Dinner was a well-attended, great success. Thank you to everyone who was involved in planning and organizing, and to our respected guests that attended this event!
