 | Lakehead Wrestler Wins Light Heavyweight Championship Former Lakehead Thunderwolves heavyweight wrestler and UFC veteran Rob MacDonald captured the Ring of Fire World Light Heavyweight Championship MMA (mixed martial arts) title. MacDonalds win over defending Ring of Fire champion Elliot Marshall was one of the feature bouts at Ring of Fire 31, “Undisputed”, on Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Broomfield Event Centre in Broomfield, Colorado. MacDonald graduated from Lakehead with a Bachelor’s of Education Degree in 2003; the year he also claimed a CIS national bronze medal in the heavyweight wrestling division for the Thunderwolves. MacDonald went on to become a Toronto police officer but he missed the competition of one-on-one martial arts such as wrestling, so the obvious next step was mixed martial arts and the UFC. He became a contestant on the UFC Ultimate Fighter Season 2 reality TV series but a serious shoulder injury forced him out early. However, the UFC liked the potential of the 6’3” 203 fighter and he fought three UFC fights before joining the Ring of Fire MMA fighting circuit. MacDonald is a 2003 Education graduate from Lakehead University and earns his living full-time as a Toronto street gang task force cop.
