Mike Self

Thunderwolves Graduate Profiles: Men's Hockey: Mike Self

By Mike Aylward
Lakehead Athletics
March 13, 2007

Mike Self played four seasons for the Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s hockey team and in those four years the Peterborough native established himself as one of the toughest defenders in OUA hockey.

He played hard-nosed defense but he could also carry the puck when called upon or make nice outlet passes to start a Lakehead rush. Unfortunately, Self was hampered by injury for the first half of this past season but the General Arts student finished his Lakehead career with 6 goals and 27 assists.

Lakehead fans will remember him for some bone-crunching hits on opponents and many will remember his fine 2005-06 OUA Queen’s Cup Championship season where he scored some timely goals for the Wolves as they also earned a CIS national silver medal.

Mike SelfLead assistant coach Darrin Nicholas said Self made strong contributions to Lakehead hockey. “The team staff would like to congratulate Mike on graduating from the program, and thank him for all the positive contributions he's made to the club during his tenure with the team. His physical presence on the ice, and his skill, particularly in killing off key penalties, will be difficult to replace. We'd like to wish Mike all the best in his future endeavors, whether they be in a hockey rink or otherwise. “

Self has just left Thunder Bay to join the Fresno Falcons of the ECHL as they make their way to the playoffs and he begins his professional career and Thunderwolves Hockey wishes him all the best of success both on and off the ice.

Self: Being a part of and supported by the community. I will never forget the great playoff run we had in 2005-2006 ending with a Queen's Cup Championship and a national silver medal.

Q: What do you think was your top athletic achievement or performance as a Lakehead Varsity Athlete?

Self: My top achievement or performance as a Lakehead Varsity Athlete as far as I am concerned would be the role I played in the 2005-2006 season helping our team get to nationals, and coming so close to winning a national cup.

Q: What did being a Lakehead varsity athlete teach you that will help you in your life after university?

Self: Being a Varsity athlete at LU definitely helped me mature as a person, and as an athlete, and going to university for four years and coming out with a degree. I had many great memories and experiences as a member of the hockey team and these are things that will always be there to help me in life after hockey.
