Message from the Office of Alumni Relations

Each year, the new academic year symbolizes new beginnings, and this year is no different. We hope that everyone had an enjoyable summer spent with family and friends. For our new and returning students, we would like to extend a heart filled “Welcome” as they prepare to embark upon the new school year.

The Alumni Association will be holding their Annual General Meeting on October 22nd, 2011 at the Westin Harbour Castle in the Premier Suite from 1-4pm. We would like to invite all alumni to attend. This meeting will be an opportunity to share and bring forward ideas for events programming, learn about the Alumni Association and to stay involved with our alma mater.

Brian Holm (BSc ’74; BAdmin ’97) passed away in Thunder Bay this past March at the age of 61.  A lifelong learner who believed strongly in the value of education, Brian continued to support his alma mater long after graduation.

Lakehead University graduate and world-caliber sailor Robert Frost is heading to the world sailing championships in Australia, the first qualifier for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Robert Reukl has been a long-standing supporter of Lakehead University. Throughout the years, he has given his time generously as well as financially supported the Geology department and Alumni Association. As a geology graduate of Lakehead University, he has been employed as a geologist in the mineral exploration and mining business for over 25 years.

This past June, Mike Snoddon and Neva Bassingthwaite, Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) president and vice president – student issues, spent five days building a house for a Guatemalan family. They returned home from their trip with a better understanding of the hardships many people confront every day.

The Office of Admissions and Recruitment is excited to announce the Lakehead University Live and Learn Video Contest - open to all current Lakehead students and alumni. They invite you to put together a short 90-second video showcasing your story, your friends' stories, your involvement at University, adventures on- and off- campus – anything that shows how you Live and Learn at Lakehead University.

On September 15th, 2011, the Alumni Relations Office held a very successful Southern Ontario Reunion at The Steam Whistle Brewery.  We were pleased to meet our alumni and to hear their stories about life after graduation. Approximately 120 people from the Greater Toronto Area attended the event. Since 1965, we have seen over 48,000 students graduate and by taking the time to attend events like this reunion, alumni show their support and appreciation for Lakehead University.

The Lakehead Alumni Relations Office was honored to sponsor the Full Moon Memory Walk. 

Every year, the walk aims to raise awareness and support for the families and friends of murdered and missing Anishinabe and Métis women.

Published by the English Student Association, The Artery has featured works of poetry, prose, non-fiction and artwork by Lakehead students, faculty, staff, and alumni. This is the third year of publication and the executive team encourages all students, from all disciplines to participate.
