On Thursday, March 3rd 2011 at 3:30 pm, LUSU President Mike Snoddon brought together over a hundred students to take a stand against increasing tuition fees. The Lakehead University Student Union and students rallied with posters in front of the Senate Chambers, during the Board of Governors Meeting. A rally was also organized by LUSU Orillia Coordinator, Leigh Castle, at the Orillia campus and sixty people showed.
The cost of tuition is an important issue for current students, recent graduates, and for potential students. It is a challenging task to pay off loans, and bills.
Mike Snoddon sent an email to all Lakehead students, showing the breakdown if tuition was increased by 5%:
Tuition Increases
Overall: 5%
Undergraduate Programs:4.5% first year
4% continuing years
Professional Programs
(Commerce and Engineering): 8% first year
4% continuing years
Graduate Programs: 8% first year (first three terms)
4% continuing years
Visa (International) Students: 6.62%
10.29% (Bachelor of Administration, Commerce and Engineering)
It was stated that undergraduate tuition will be increased by 4.5% in section 5.7 from the minutes of an Internal Relations Committee Meeting on February 15, 2011. (http://hr.lakeheadu.ca/irc.php?mid=46)
